Tom Pemberton, farming vlogger and owner of Pemberton’s Farm Shop & Dairy in Lytham, appointed Wareing Buildings to replace two dilapidated cow sheds with a single facility to improve the welfare of the 115 cows on site and support the farm with its anticipated increase in demand for dairy output.

The building includes a 22.5˚ pitch roof and a protected daylight roof ridge which work together to draw hot, stagnant air out of the shed to improve air quality and optimise ventilation.

To meet the environmental requirements set out during the planning phase a number of companies had to work in partnership to find a solution for the construction project.

It is the first commercial breeder farm in the UK to have installed an exhaust air to biofiltration system. The site is a showcase for other poultry farmers considering the biofiltration system.

The yard has been designed and built with the horses health and wellbeing as the main consideration.

There is stabling for 94 horses in total, each stable has memory foam flooring and windows for better ventilation. Two of the buildings have separate outside areas for each stable which is very beneficial for horses wellbeing.

This project was a challenge given the compact site in which the building was cited next to some mature trees that needed to remain in situ. Great care was taken during the build to ensure that the building was positioned to fit and work with trees in their existing layout.

Attention to the local environment was a key aspect for this building with the reclaimed oak boarding being sourced locally from a Lincolnshire saw mill to reduce the carbon impact of the project. Solar and rain water harvesting systems were included within the design to make the building as self-sufficient as possible operationally whilst maintaining a high quality appearance and design.

The client housed their Suckler herd in a building which was over 30 years old and that had never been properly designed for modern livestock housing.

The building and its design have been such a success that the farmer is seeing the full benefits and is now seeking to extend the facility over the next year.

The entire project, including build-up of levels, building envelope, fit out and commissioning was completed in 30 weeks. Challenges include working side by side with the lodge construction site to one side, and live animal facilities to the other.

This project excelled due to the challenges which had to be overcome, working in conjunction with the park itself. As well as the challenges faced by operating on a live site, including all deliveries strictly in and out of the park pre-10am and being in full view of the paying public
