The size of project is not that uncommon but the industrial location, quite literally on the side of a tidal river, made access a challenge and pushed the erecting teams.

Dawson’s wharf is a 42 acre site with 1km of river frontage which can be seen from miles away due to three 42m high fabrication halls filling the Middlesbrough skyline along with the famous transporter bridge in the background.

Wareing Buildings was called upon to construct a three-sided, steel framed building that would allow swift delivery of materials, providing a place for them to be briefly stored after delivery before being disbursed to their end location in the factory.

The build was completed while the site remained fully operational and thanks for the design, at Graham & Brown are now completely efficient and wastage due to damage by weather has been eliminated.

Wareing Buildings provided the design and build of the warehouses, with the completed developments featuring a checkerboard-style external cladding finish in keeping with previous units it has constructed at Whitehills.

This is the latest in a series of projects that Wareing have completed on behalf of commercial development and investment company Henco at Whitehills Business Park.

The site’s location on an old rendering plant presented numerous challenges regarding the ground conditions, with numerous old chambers and existing foundations to contend with.

The client is delighted with the end result, and recently launched a further recruitment drive of admin, customer care and office staff after successfully securing a significant new contract.

Since 2008 Shufflebottom have been designing, fabricating and erecting buildings here. The standard of workmanship has been high throughout. The buildings have been used here primarily as manufacturing and production facilities for the manufacture of aluminium window components.

From the outset, the impact a building of this size would have on the surrounding area, visually and environmentally, was clear. As such, these were major considerations to be taken into account at the design stage.

Now complete, it is a hugely impressive structure that blends well with and, arguably, even enhances its surroundings.

The use of cladding colours is particularly effective at giving the impression of the building blending into the sky and the building appears nowhere near as tall as it is actually is.
